Bethune-Cookman University Photograph Collection 1895-1980 1920-1970

This collection contains photographs taken mostly for use by the historically black Bethune-Cookman University in its publications. The images concern all aspects of university life, such as athletics, commencement, homecoming events, and portraits of faculty, students, and alumni. Images of the university presidents include personal photographs as well as those taken for the university. The collection holds images of the both the inside and outside of buildings, some of which no longer exist. Instructors appear in portraits and in the classroom, while students are shown in club photographs, studying, and socializing.

On October 4, 1904, Mary McLeod Bethune founded what is today Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Having realized that the young children of African-American laborers who worked on Florida's railroads had no opportunities to receive an education, Mary McLeod Bethune rented a small house on Oak Street, the site of the annual fall Oak Street Pilgrimage, to educate those children.
